The annual Bishwanath and Sandhya Sinha Memorial Endowed Fellowship at the School of Media Studies in The New School is a year-long funded research assistantship in the area of Media Studies, with an emphasis on the intersections between media and migration. The Sinha Fellow will be affiliated with the Media+Migration Lab, which runs projects such as the Migration Mapping digital archive. Depending on the selected student’s interests, opportunities for Fellows include creating or curating multimedia projects about media and migration for the M2Lab platform, writing short media analyses or reflections, pursuing networks and collaborations, maintaining and managing digital databases, engaging in online outreach efforts, and organizing on-campus events.
Applications are open to M.A. students at The New School studying in Media Studies or related programs for the 2024-25 academic year. Applicants’ research interests can be in any of the following areas: media and migration, technology and emerging cultures, media and cultural representations, media environments, media infrastructures, data analysis, and media theory, design, history, criticism, or practices. The selected student will have demonstrated excellence in their academic program so far. Preferred web-based skills include a strong familiarity with WordPress for content maintenance, proficiency with HTML/CSS/Javascript, and design capabilities such as video editing, graphic design, animation, or extended reality (XR).
This endowed fellowship was established by Dr Sumita S Chakravarty to honor the memory of her parents, Bishwanath and Sandhya Sinha, and their deep love of learning. Prof. Chakravarty says of her parents: “They were incredibly kind, generous, and loving people. They were also very forward-looking and open-minded. I cannot think of a better way to share their legacy than to extend it to coming generations of our students.”
Eligibility: full-time MA student starting second year in the MA program, or has a minimum of 9 earned credits at the time of application.
GPA: 3.7 and above
Duration of fellowship: one academic year (Fall 2024 through Spring 2025)
Hours: Equivalent to a Research Assistantship: 8.5 hours per week for 30 weeks

b) a copy of your DegreeWorks page
c) a 500-word statement describing your research interests, and a specific question about the intersection of migration and media that you would like to address or explore. See: Media+Migration Lab and its Migration Mapping project
d) name of a full-time faculty member who can provide a recommendation letter
e) (Optional) creative portfolio or personal website of projects such as video/film, graphic design, XR projects, media artworks, etc.
