Farm Worker Ecologies by Maggie Meyer

Sinha Fellow, Maggie Meyer, has posted her project, Farm Worker Ecologies, on the M2Lab site. This project discusses the connections between food, activism, and migration in the United States by drawing attention to two individuals on the forefront of farm worker organizing and resistance efforts: Alfredo Zeferino and Narsiso Martinez. By using an ecological lens to intellectually engage with their work and circumstances, and drawing from Rachel Ida Buff’s historical scholarship connecting immigrant organizing and deportation terror in the United States, Maggie aims to demonstrate the connections between farm workers, activism, and immigration organizing to the everyday experiences of food consumers across the United States. During the 1990s, after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, Australian journalist Anna Funder visited the former East Germany several times to find out for herself what life had been like for the average person during the forty years of communist rule. Her book, Stasiland, was the result. Walls and borders have been very much on our minds lately, here at the Media+Migration Lab, as well as discussions of democracy, authoritarianism, citizenship and rights in the newsmedia, and so I went back to Funder’s book, wondering how it would feel to step into that world. Applications are open to continuing M.A. students in Media Studies for this research fellowship in the amount of $5,100 for the academic year 2025-26.

Application Due Date: July 1, 2025

The annual Bishwanath and Sandhya Sinha Memorial Endowed Fellowship at the School of Media Studies in The New School is a year-long funded research assistantship in the area of Media Studies, with an emphasis on the intersections between media and migration. The Sinha Fellow will be affiliated with the Media+Migration Lab, which runs projects such as the Migration Mapping digital archive.

Depending on the selected student’s interests, opportunities for Fellows include creating or curating multimedia projects about media and migration for the M2Lab platform, writing short media analyses or reflections, pursuing networks and collaborations, maintaining and managing digital databases, engaging in online outreach efforts, and organizing on-campus events.

Applications are open to M.A. students at The New School studying in Media Studies or related programs for the 2025-26 academic year. Applicants’ research interests can be in any of the following areas: media and migration, technology and emerging cultures, media and cultural representations, media environments, media infrastructures, data analysis, and media theory, design, history, criticism, or practices. The selected student will have demonstrated excellence in their academic program so far. Preferred web-based skills include a strong familiarity with WordPress for content maintenance, proficiency with HTML/CSS/Javascript, and design capabilities such as video editing, graphic design, animation, or extended reality (XR).
